“You can call me Alice. Because it’s my name.”

church-window-window-rosette-glass-window-47035.jpeg I was shocked and saddened to read about the death of the actress Emma Chambers at the age of just 53. I can only imagine the sense of loss and grief her family and friends must be feeling.

I have huge gratitude to the people who have brought characters to life in the shows, plays, books and films that I love, and which bring me joy and comfort, time after time.

With that in mind, I want to share with you some of my favourite episodes from ‘The Vicar of Dibley’, with a special focus on Alice Tinker, so wonderfully brought to life by Emma Chambers. Rest in Peace.

Animals – The village holds a church service for its animals.

Favourite quote: “Well I can’t believe that the stuff that is not I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butter is not I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butter. And I can’t believe that both I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butter and the stuff that I can’t believe is not I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butter are both, in fact, not butter. And I believe…they both might be butter…in a cunning disguise. And, in fact, there’s a lot more butter around than we all thought there was.

Engagement – Hugo and Alice get engaged.

Favourite quote: “He’s sucked out all my juice and discarded me like an empty carton of ribena!

Winter – Alice gives birth during the village nativity play.

Best quote: “We’ve decided to name the baby after you. So we’re going to call her Vicar.”

Merry Christmas – Alice redecorates and gives Geraldine one of David’s priceless artworks.

Best quote: “Something bigger than a drawing pin and smaller than a bed. Right, got it.

The Handsome Stranger – Alice believes she is a descendant of Jesus.

Best quote: Geraldine: “You believe that you, Alice, are the direct descendant of Jesus Christ?”
Alice: “Well it’s hard to come to any other conclusion with the evidence available.”
